COVER-UP PREPARATION

COVER-UP PREPARATION

What do you do, when there is no space left on your body for another tattoo?

For many tattoo fans the removal of even a single tattoo is not even worth considering. But even people who have their whole body covered in tattoos change their taste, partners or body image. The famous Rick Genest with the nickname “zombie boy” who has his whole body tattooed uses cover-up make-up at least for advertising. But would he take several hours a day cover himself in make-up if his skeleton does not suit him anymore?

#1 HOW DOES A COVER-UP WORK?

A better solution in the long run is a cover-up tattoo. The old tattoo gets covered by a new one. Usually the new tattoo gets darker and bigger. With old tattoos that are already big and dark a cover-up can become quite a challenge. Most tattoo artists therefore recommend a cover-up preparation by laser.

For a cover-up treatment the old tattoo gets treated so that a new image can take it place. The laser operator treats the tattoo the same way as for a tattoo removal.

In each session the tattoo that is supposed to vanish will be traced by laser. The ultra quick, high-power light impulses burst the colour pigments of the tattoo ink which are stored in the second skin layer. This way, the immune system can transfer the colour pigments and the treated area fades until the colour completely vanishes. Our modern laser removes fine areas of a tattoo (e.g. facial features or fine lines for a cover-up) and is also suitable for correcting permanent make-up. Thanks to the variable spot size also larger tattoos can be treated for a cover-up.

#2 HOW MUCH DOES A COVER-UP PREPARATION COST?

The cost of a cover-up depends on image and size of the new tattoo. The bigger the treated area, the higher the cost. Unlike a complete tattoo removal a cover-up preparation takes only a few treatments. Shades and fine lines usually can be removed in one treatment.

#3 HOW LONG DOES A COVER-UP PREPARATION TAKE?

For some cover-ups the old tattoo only needs to fade a bit. For this, we usually need only a few laser treatments. Amateur tattoos often can be completely removed within 2 to 4 sessions. To make a sound decision, you need to consult with your tattoo artist and your tattoo removal professional.

It is important to keep an appropriate time interval between your last laser treatment and having your new tattoo done. For the dermis (second skin layer) to regenerate, we recommend to wait at least six months before new colour pigments get inserted into the skin. The longer, the better! That is true for all tattoo removals. Let your immune system rest between treatments, so your body has time to metabolize the colour pigments. Your laser professional will advise you thoroughly. Only untrustworthy providers offer short treatment intervals with four weeks or less. Regarding your tattoo artist as well as your laser operator please consider: Carefully choose trustworthy experts and always pay attention to hygiene standards of studios.

PETER VON ZIGURI TATTOOS

My studio, Ziguri Tätowierungen, was founded 14 years ago and I have been doing tattoos for roughly 23 years. I lived in Thailand for while and also did tattoos there. In 1993 I moved back to Berlin and worked in different studios until I opened my own shop in Grunewaldstraße in Berlin Schöneberg. It is important to me to work with concentration in a calm and cosy atmosphere.

#8 WHICH RISKS AND SIDE-EFFECTS ARE THERE?

Sometimes, it is enough for the old tattoo to fade to create a cover-up. Usually, this only takes a few laser session. Amateur tattoos can even be completely removed in two to four treatments. But to decide that, you need to consult with your tattoo artist and your tattoo removal professional.

It is important to keep enough time between the last laser treatment and getting the new tattoo. For the dermis (second skin layer) to sufficiently regenerate, we recommend to wait at least six months after the last laser treatment until you insert new colour into your skin. The longer you wait, the better! This is also true for every tattoo removal by laser. Let your immune system rest between treatments, so your body can properly eliminate the pigments. Your laser therapist should advise you comprehensively on this. Only trustworthy providers and profiteers demand shorter treatment intervals of four weeks or less. Regarding your tattoo artist as well as your laser operator please consider: Carefully choose trustworthy experts and always pay attention to the hygiene standards of studios.
